Safeguard mechanisms
1. National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage
The only legally valid form of protection of an intangible cultural heritage, at national level, consists in its registration in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage, a process that must result from the active involvement of the communities, groups and individuals who hold the manifestation.
AREAS OF INSCRIPTION:
- Oral traditions and expressions, including language as a vector of intangible cultural heritage;
- Artistic expressions and manifestations of performative character;
- Social practices, rituals and festive events;
- Knowledge and practices related to nature and the universe;
- Skills in traditional processes and techniques.

We help throughout the whole process of identification, study and documentation to prepare inventory requests.
WHO CAN WE HELP?
Associations, municipalities, intermunicipal communities, or others, following the criteria laid down in national legislation, in line with the Direção Geral de Património Cultural (national) and the Regional Directorates of Culture.
2. Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity
At the international level, and after the cultural manifestation has been registered in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage, it can be applied for at the international level – UNESCO – through the Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage or the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding.

- Oral traditions and expressions, including language as a vehicle of the intangible cultural heritage;
- Performing arts;
- Social practices, rituals and festive events;
- Knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe;
- Traditional craftsmanship.
HOW CAN WE HELP?
After the inscription of the cultural manifestation in the National Inventory, IPDT advises the planning process, research and submission of the application requests, in articulation with the UNESCO National Commission, and compliance with the criteria and guidelines provided by UNESCO.
