Intangible Cultural Heritage – National Inventory

Preserving identity is nurturing the essence of our history.

Each tradition, each story, each expression reflects the soul of its people. It is the essence of who we are, the narrative that defines us, and the legacy we pass on to future generations. Preserving and valuing cultural heritage is a priority for all destinations and communities. With a specialised and dedicated approach, we guide, support, and facilitate the entire process, from preparing the application to its submission, ensuring goals are achieved and international recognition is secured as a tribute to our roots.

To ensure the effectiveness of this process, we incorporate mechanisms to measure and monitor performance against defined goals. This enables the organisation to assess its progress, make informed adjustments, and communicate its achievements to stakeholders.

Why classify Intangible Cultural Heritage?

Our experience in the tourism sector supports the view that Culture, Heritage, and Tourism should be developed together in an inclusive, positive, and sustainable way. This approach ensures a balance between supply and demand, while preserving the authenticity of destinations, communities, and their traditions.

Community valorisation

Safeguarding intangible cultural heritage means valuing and honouring the knowledge and skills of communities, keeping the authenticity of cultural practices alive over time and recognising their unique contribution to cultural identity. These practices are not merely artistic expressions or techniques, they tell stories, reflect values, and shape the identity of a people.

Cultural Identity

Each expression of intangible cultural heritage represents a unique identity of the community and its territory, reflecting the traditions, beliefs, and values that define them. These expressions not only enrich cultural diversity but also strengthen the bonds within the community, fostering a sense of belonging and continuity over time.

Estate for the Future

Preserving intangible cultural heritage is a commitment to the future, leaving a diverse and magnificent legacy for future generations. It is a living treasure that enriches community identity and contributes to the continuity and appreciation of culture over time.

Barco Moliceiro

2021 — 2025

Preserving the Moliceiro Boat means honouring the knowledge of its masters and ensuring that this art continues to sail into the future.

The inscription of “Moliceiro Boat: The Art of Ship Carpentry of the Aveiro Region” in the National Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage, as an entry under urgent safeguarding, marks a crucial step in preserving one of the foremost symbols of Portugal’s lagoon identity.

Since 2021, IPDT has been providing technical support for this process in close collaboration with the Intermunicipal Community of the Aveiro Region, with the aim of protecting the craftsmanship of master builders and painters, whose continuity is currently under threat.

The official recognition highlights the historical, social, and cultural value of this tradition, as well as its importance for the sustainable development of the region. This inscription strengthens the ambition to see the Moliceiro boat included in UNESCO’s Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
